Το «A Kind of Magic» κυκλοφόρησε ως single στις 17 Μαρτίου του 1986 και έφτασε ως το Νο 3 της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας και ως το Νο 42 των Η.Π.Α. Επιπλέον, έδωσε το όνομά του στον δωδέκατο δίσκο των Queen που κυκλοφόρησε στις 3 Ιουνίου του 1986.


Το «A Kind of Magic» είναι ένα pop-rock τραγούδι του οποίου τη μελωδία και τις συγχορδίες έγραψε ο drummer των Queen, Roger Meddows Taylor. Το τραγούδι γράφτηκε για την ταινία φαντασίας του Russell Mulcahy, Highlander (Χαϊλάντερ), τη μουσική της οποίας ανέλαβαν οι Queen. Η φράση «a kind of magic» χρησιμοποιείται στην ταινία από τον πρωταγωνιστή της, Christophe Lambert, και εντυπωσίασε τόσο πολύ τον Taylor που την έκανε ολόκληρο τραγούδι.


Οι Queen ήταν επιλογή του ίδιου του σκηνοθέτη ο οποίος θεωρούσε ότι ήταν οι καταλληλότεροι για να ντύσουν μουσικά την ταινία του. Μάλιστα, ο Russell Mulcahy ανέλαβε και το video-clip του τραγουδιού το οποίο ήταν και το πρώτο των Queen με computer animation.
Όταν το βρετανικό συγκρότημα ηχογράφησε για την τελευταία σκηνή της ταινίας το «A Kind of Magic», ήθελε να δώσει στο τραγούδι έναν rock ήχο. Για το δίσκο τους, όμως, οι Queen προτίμησαν έναν πιο pop ήχο και γι’ αυτό το λόγο ο Freddie Mercury έκανε κάποιες αλλαγές, πρόσθεσε κάποια ορχηστρικά διαστήματα, άλλαξε τη διάταξη του τραγουδιού και μαζί με τον David Richards, παρήγαγε εκ νέου το τραγούδι με έναν ήχο πιο pop.
Η εκδοχή του Freddie Mercury είναι αυτή που μπήκε τελικά στο άλμπουμ των Queen ενώ η εκδοχή του Roger Taylor ακούγεται στο τέλος της ταινίας. Παρόλα αυτά το τραγούδι φέρει ακόμα ως δημιουργό του μόνο τον Taylor.
Η εκδοχή του Freddie Mercury είναι επιπλέον αυτή που κυκλοφόρησε ως single περιλαμβάνοντας στα keyboards και τον Spike Edney, έναν μουσικό που συνόδευε τους Queen σε κάποιες συναυλίες τους.
Το τραγούδι ξεκινάει με το ρυθμικό μπάσο του John Deacon που συνοδεύεται από τον σταθερό ρυθμικό στίχο «It’s A Kind of Magic» και το ταυτόχρονο κροτάλισμα δακτύλων. Μοιάζει περισσότερο να γράφτηκε από τον John Deacon ή τον Freddie Mercury για το δίσκο “Hot Space” (τον funk disco δίσκο των Queen του 1982) παρά από τον Roger Taylor για το “Highlander’’.


Το σόλο του Brian May περιέχει ολόκληρα μαθήματα κιθάρας και μουσικής θεωρίας. Άλλωστε και το ίδιο το τραγούδι ταλαντεύεται ανάμεσα στην pop, με τα εφέ και το ρυθμό του, και το rock, με τα σόλο και την ερμηνεία του Freddie Mercury.
Παρά τη χλιαρή υποδοχή που συνάντησε στις Η.Π.Α., το τραγούδι ανέβηκε στο Νο 1 σε περισσότερες από 35 χώρες σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο ενώ είναι και το 25ο τραγούδι των Queen που ανέβηκε στο Top 30 της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας. Επιπλέον, στη Γερμανία κυκλοφόρησε μία συλλεκτική έκδοση του τραγουδιού σε μόλις 555 αντίτυπα με θήκη ένα δερμάτινο πορτοφόλι.

Φοίβος Δεληβοριάς - Το μέλλον απ' το παρελθόν

Όταν λοιπόν την πρωτοείδε, ένιωσε πόσο ήτανε ξένος
Την αχρηστία των μαρμάρων και των γλυκών συγχορδιών
Τα ρούχα του και τα μαλλιά του μοιάζαν μιας άλλης ηλικίας
Ήταν κάποιος περασμένος κι αυτή ήταν τ’ άγνωστο παρόν

Αυτή ήταν τα καινούργια στέκια, με τον πορτιέρη που διαλέγει
